It has a very slight camber or curve to it, much like a cheap barbell would if loaded up with an enormous amount of weight and left sitting in a power rack (gym owners love that). The main advantage of the Buffalo Bar is that it takes stress off the shoulders when performing squats. Your hands rest lower on the Buffalo Bar than they normally would on a straight bar, thus making it ideal for people with injured shoulders or poor flexibility. While many specialty bars have this advantage, the Buffalo Bar is the only one that allows you to squat with the same technique and setup as with a normal bar. In other words, a squat done with a Buffalo Bar is the same as one done with a straight bar. This makes it great to train with for entire meet cycles, relieving shoulder stress and allowing lifters to train their bench press effectively. While price may be a little steep for some people, it's hard to put a price on healthy shoulders and more years of productive training. Conclusion: The Buffalo Bar rules. Cambered Squat Bar. This is probably the oddest looking bar and like the Buffalo Bar, great for relieving stress off of the shoulders. But the bar is much more than shoulder relief – it really turns squatting into a different movement. What most people first notice when using the Cambered Squat Bar is how unstable the bar is. The weight rocks back and forth and forces the lifter to stay very tight and controlled. While this might sound like a good thing, this makes it the last bar I'd let a beginner use. When someone is trying to learn a new movement, the last thing you want to do is throw more curveballs at them. The concentric phase of a squat with a Cambered Squat Bar is always interesting. Due to the instability of the bar you can't push as fast at the bottom, but you have to push tight; tighter than you normally would (or should) with a straight bar. This is a great way to remind you to stay tight and push with a controlled and steady force out of the bottom of the hole. For someone that spent their life training with a fast concentric phase, this was a real learning process for me. But slowing down with this bar allowed me to learn how to squat faster because the concentric phase had to very focused. The Cambered Squat Bar is also great for good mornings. The big downside to this bar is that it always seemed uncomfortable on my back. This is in large part due to the hand placement – because your hands are around waist level, you don't get to form a nice shelf with your upper back to rest the bar. Thus, placing the bar in a low bar position is very dangerous. Also, because the bar is so drastically different in shape, it can alter many people's squat form. Not greatly, but enough that it becomes a different movement than a straight bar squat. Conclusion: A great variation to throw in, but in a traditional lifting program, it may be best used with assistance lifts. Cambered Bench Bar. Also known as the Mc. Donald Bar, the Cambered Bench Bar is a great tool to develop low- end strength in the bench press. Mike Mc. Donald was a tremendous bench presser and credited this bar in part to his success. The Cambered Bench Bar allows the lifter to use a greater range of motion, allowing the hands to go about an inch or two deeper than with a straight bar. Because most raw lifters are weakest in the low to mid- range of the bench press, this bar is great for developing that area. Unfortunately, it can be very risky, as the increased range of motion can strain the pecs and shoulders. Lifters have used smaller boards on their chest to restrict some of the strain (a 1/2. I've also seen many lifters use the bar the opposite way, turning the camber the other way and using it as a makeshift board press. Due to the strain on the shoulders, the bar can be very awkward to use with heavier weights. The camber can start to tilt when you're pressing and is more hassle than it's worth. Also, the Cambered Bench Bars that I've used didn't have the tough knurling and seemed thinner than a standard barbell. I've used this bar as an assistance movement, much like someone would use dumbbells. I certainly wouldn't change out the standard barbell bench press for this bar, but I can see its benefits as an assistance exercise. Conclusion: Good for assistance work, but only for a select few that can handle the increased range of motion. Safety Squat Bar. After the Buffalo Bar, this is probably my favorite specialty bar to use. Like the other bars it's easy on the shoulders, but this bar shines in several different ways: Building your deadlift and your squat. This bar is great for strengthening your entire lower body and back. The cambered part of the bar dumps you forward, forcing you to fight to stay somewhat upright. One thing I've learned from some very strong lifters is to purposely round a bit when using this bar during a squat. This replicates the back position during a deadlift and really forces you to strain in this position. And while this can certainly help your pull, having extra leg and back strength is never a bad thing when trying to improve your squat. Conan approved! I don't recommend this bar for beginners learning to squat – it's a vastly different movement than a normal squat and can be very awkward. But for an experienced squatter this bar is 1. Conan Approved because you can just grunt lift. Once I un- rack this bar, I make sure I open the knees, sit back a bit, and stay tight. But once I'm at the bottom, all bets are off. I just muscle the weight up with little regard to form. With my hands on the yoke, I drive everything up at the same time, trying to keep my elbows high. I'm not saying I squat with bad form, it's simply easier to just squat and not worry about the angle of your pinky toe. It's a nice refreshing departure from what can become an overcomplicated lift. The form used with the safety squat bar is far different from a straight bar. This is fine if you're an experienced squatter, but may confuse the hell out of a beginner. It's probably not something I'd put a beginner under unless he's suffering from a shoulder or wrist injury. I'm a huge fan of doing good mornings with the safety squat bar. And I'm embarrassed to say this, but I've done a triceps extensions/JM Press combo- thing with the SS Bar and it was not a good idea. I won't comment on this further due to the high amount of ridiculousness. Conclusion: Great bar for building your squat and deadlift, but not for actually training your squat. Trap Bar. There are different opinions about the Trap Bar, with the majority giving it a thumbs down because it doesn't carry over well to the regular deadlift. For people that don't compete in powerlifting, the Trap Bar is a great option. You can't argue the benefits of picking up something heavy off the ground whether it it be a Trap Bar or straight bar, so who am I to say it's not good? The biggest advantage to the Trap Bar is the handles – they keep the bar close to your center of gravity. So in theory, it will make the lift safer. The Trap Bar also uses more quad than a normal deadlift. I've heard stories of people doing high pulls with a Trap Bar but I've never figured out how that worked. It's also great for doing shrugs and drag rows, but I wouldn't buy this bar just for those two exercises. The one drawback to most Trap Bars (or Hex Bars as they're often called) is the short sleeves. Even with the thinnest of plates these sleeves make it very hard to get appreciable weight on the bar. I was lucky enough to purchase a larger Hex Bar about 1. I bought it. If you're stronger than the average person this may prevent you from using this bar in any meaningful capacity. Of course, the sport specific crowd jumped on this one and heralded it as the poster child of pressing, but let's keep this article free of the riff- raff and fallacies of sport specificity. The Football Bar is a great variation to the standard bar and very easy on the shoulders. It kills the triceps when using it during a pressing exercise and can also be used for hammer curls. Also, one of my favorite exercises with this bar is the full range front raise – raising the bar until it's over head. Steve Morris Engines Assembles The Heart Of Project Evil 8. For Morris, there was minimal challenge in the design process of the motor. Outside of always making sure we had the correct camshaft profile which I design all of that myself there isn’t anything off- the- hook that’s presented any big problems or issues.”With a limited blower build like this, you can build an engine that is too big, and too good – Steve Morris. There are a few hurdles in play when it comes to putting an engine together for a project like this, but with his many years of experience, Morris is more than ready to tackle them.“Typically, when I approach an engine build similar to this, I’m going to examine what the rules are for the class so I can start tailoring the engine around that. I look at what our limitations are for the class, what the car has to weigh, tire size, fuel type, and many other things. When it comes to this particular engine build, it’s restricted on what blower can be used, so it really limits how much air we can put into the motor,” Morris says. The ARP head studs were picked to help keep all the boost inside Evil 8. To that point, every car is going to be different in how it handles the power you’re trying to put down. One of the biggest limitations of Evil 8. Morris needed to approach where the motor brings power in. The limits of the classes that Evil 8. With the 8. 5- inch tire class Evil 8. The Brodix BD 2. 30. Because the heads are considered an inline unit, Evil 8. The Xi- Vortech blower we chose to provide boost for the Brodix based engine is the largest allowed for the class, hence why this is a “limited” class rules build. With the limited blower moving too much air through the motor, issues will arise because it will drive up the parasitic losses to the point that it hurts how much power the engine can produce. Morris has a high level of experience with these types of builds and knows what to watch for when choosing parts for the project. We also look at how much air that’s going to move through this motor before it runs that blower out of the map. It’s all about trying to match the blower and the engine size correctly,” Morris says. The short- block of Evil 8. Diamond, GRP, Bryant, and Isky. The Block Foundation Of Evil 8. The engine block being used for this build is an aluminum Brodix SBC solid block, so no water will flow through it. This block features a 9. Keyway roller lifters. Everything about this block screams strength, from the Hot Isostatic Pressure process that’s used to create it, to the strategic extra stiffening measures used throughout the block. Making this block extra strong is something that Brodix was striving for when they introduced the product. According to Mark Fretz at Brodix, the HIP (Hot Isostatic Pressing) process plays an important role in the goal of producing a tough block that can take power- adder punishment. It’s not as strong as billet, but it’s stronger than a standard cast block. This block is the best thing we have available for a blower, turbo, or nitrous engine,” Fretz explains. The HIP process is also what makes this solid aluminum block such a great choice for a boosted application like Evil 8. When you do that process and it removes anything trapped in the metal out, it compacts it to the point where it’s a more dense, solid, and stronger piece.“Since this isn’t a billet block it’s not limited in certain classes and offers racers an option for an extremely strong block. With your standard cast block, when you get to a certain power level, you find the pressure limitations it can take. When we HIP the block, it really raises the strength level and helps bridge the gap between a standard cast block and a billet one,” Fretz says. The Brodix block is full of added material to help make it extremely strong where it counts. For this particular block, Morris and his team really didn’t need to do anything different in the machining process. For them, it’s all about taking their time, making sure everything is right, and triple checking the work. Since this motor is being built for a boosted application, Morris only had to adjust a few clearances during the process, so nothing majorly different than other builds. Morris goes into a bit of detail on just how they make sure the block is right from the start. Then we line- hone it to make sure it’s correct. Since the Brodix block doesn’t come line- honed, we had to take it to clearance size anyway. Then, we will rough bore and hone the block, followed by a mock- up assembly, and rotate it after that to see what kind of clearancing, if any, we have to do with the assembly. We will then do the O- ring and receiver groove, deck the block, put the O- rings in, and then the final bore and hone is done.“We then go to the lifter side of things. Since it’s Keyway- style, we had to fabricate a tool to make sure we installed them correctly. After that’s done, we do another mock- up assembly where we’ll add the camshaft to be sure everything clears for it, check for valve- to- piston clearance, and then check for pushrod clearance issues,” Morris explains. If they offer an upgraded material, I will go with that just to add to the strength for the boosted applications.”The Bryant crank is dripping with ARP fastener jewelry that attaches the GRP connecting rods. The pistons received an extremely durable hard- anodized coating that Morris is a big fan of, because it helps the piston’s strength and longevity. It’s super- durable and very tough, and that makes it really last under these harsh boosted conditions. Its more than a coating, it’s a heat treat process that doesn’t just wash off or wear off under use, it becomes part of the piston,” Morris explains about the anodizing process. A set of Trend’s . This one is pretty basic and simple because to give it the compression ratio we wanted using a slight conical dish, I like that the best. Alice Sebold uses the complex- compound to great effect in The Lovely Bones (3). The complex- compound is where the written word turns to music. Grammar is important, but what brings the meanings and actions of the sentence to the reader is the rhythm. An artfully constructed complex- compound sentence is sung instead of read.
